About the opportunity
The Adam Smith Fellowship is a co-sponsored program of the Mercatus Center and Liberty Fund, Inc. that aims to:
- Introduce graduate students to the core ideas of political economy
- Foster interdisciplinary dialogue and research on relevant topics
- Provide mentorship and networking opportunities with scholars and peers
- Enhance academic and professional development
Who can apply
The fellowship is open to graduate students who are:
- Enrolled in a PhD program at any university and in any discipline, including but not limited to economics, philosophy, political science, and sociology
- Interested in exploring the principles, practices, and institutions necessary for a free society
- Committed to attending and actively participating in all aspects of the scheduled program of events, including colloquia, readings, and surveys
Deadline
The application deadline for the 2024-2025 academic year is March 15, 2024. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance status by April 15, 2024.
Award
The total award of up to $10,000 includes:
- A stipend of $5,000 for the academic year
- A travel and lodging allowance of up to $5,000 to attend the colloquia hosted by the Mercatus Center
- All required readings and materials for the colloquia
Other important information
The fellowship program consists of three weekend and one weeklong colloquia that take place throughout the academic year. The colloquia cover various topics in political economy, such as the Scottish Enlightenment, public choice, constitutional political economy, and Austrian economics. The colloquia are led by Mercatus Center scholars and Liberty Fund staff, and feature guest speakers from academia and policy. The fellowship program also offers additional sources of funding for conference and research support, as well as opportunities to engage with professional organizations and networks.
